The immune system is prone to the same grave misfortunes as any defense system handling weapons: collateral damage that comes with the destruction of the enemy on one’s own territory and friendly fire due to mistaken identity. Whereas the collateral damage is the price we pay for clearance of infections, autoimmunity is a pathological process. Nevertheless, the effector mechanisms involved in both processes are the same. Whether environment can be a cause, a trigger or an amplifier of an autoimmune disease are questions that are being intensively investigated. Humans constantly receive physical, chemical and biological cues from the environment including the foods and fluids they choose to consume. The new science of nutrigenomics explores the effects of foods and food constituents on gene expression. It is about how our DNA is transcribed into mRNA and then to proteins and provides a basis for understanding the biological activity of food components, and its relationship with our immune system is beginning to reveal unique areas of potential intervention.

This full-day presentation will address the intersection of Functional Immunology with Health and Disease. Furthering the integration of neuroendocardioimmunology, we will focus on the role of chronic inflammation, which initiates at the cellular level, fueling the inflammatory cascade that spreads systemically, eventually causing enough tissue damage to be recognisable as a diagnosable condition.  Practically every known degenerative disease is a disease of inflammation at the cellular level.

Attendees will learn that the treatment of disease has little to do with treating the disease, but rather examining and treating the person who has the disease. We have learned in the first decade of the 21st Century, the role of the Human Genome in determining individual, unique responses to our world. We all have unique fingerprints, we all have unique “immune prints” – the identifiable pattern recognition of our own immune system to environmental exposures.

How is your immune print determined?

We will become intimately familiar with the science of the exposome and the inflammasome. The exposome can be defined as the measure of all the exposures of an individual in a lifetime and how those exposures relate to disease development. An individual’s exposure begins before birth and includes insults from environmental and occupational sources.

The inflammasome is the activation of cytoplasmic, multimolecular protein complexes, which regulate the activity of our inflammation response. Understanding how our exposures from our environment, diet, lifestyle, etc. interact with our own unique characteristics like genetics, physiology, and epigenetic makeup resulting in disease is how the exposome will be deciphered.

The key factor in the exposome is the ability to accurately measure exposures and the effect of those exposures. Thus, we will emphasise the use of biomarkers to determine exposure, effect of exposure, disease progression, and susceptibility factors. These will include patient questionnaires, handouts, instructional videos, in-office observations, family histories, traditional and functional serology, urine, stool and oral fluid testing procedures.

The number three cause of Morbidity and Mortality in the industrialised world is autoimmune disease. Thus, the vast majority of our patients are presenting to our offices with autoimmune mechanisms fully engaged that may not yet be at a diagnosable level. Identifying the autoimmune mechanism in a patient before recognisable symptoms have developed allows a window of opportunity to address the patient’s condition, and possibly arrest the autoimmune process.

We will explore the rapidly expanding world of predictive antibodies: their value and identification as a bio-marker of a system fighting an often-lost battle. We will also outline rational, science-based protocols, both pharmacologic and nutritional, to quench the fire of inflammation manifesting as the autoimmune cascade.

Learning Objectives

  • To understand, review and apply comprehensive individual treatment protocols including dietary changes, lifestyle evaluations (exercise, sleep patterns, …), pharmaceutical, nutritional and botanical treatments addressing chronic inflammation.
  • To understand, review and apply functional testing addressing the biomarkers of chronic inflammation, coupled with the skills to accurately interpret these tests thus contributing to the creation of effective patient-specific nutritional programmes.
  • To understand, review and apply the basic principles in the development of autoimmune disease.
  • To understand, review and apply the value of predictive antibodies, how to use them and what they mean.

About Dr O’Bryan

A graduate of the University of Michigan and the National College of Chiropractic, Dr.O’Bryan is a Diplomate of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners, a Diplomate of the American board of Clinical Nutrition, and a Certified Clinical Nutritionist with the International and American Association of Clinical Nutritionists. He is a Certified Applied Kinesiologist. He is a Certified Practitioner in Functional Biomechanics from the Motion Palpation Institute. He is a member of the Institute of Functional Medicine, the International and American Association of Clinical Nutritionists, the American Chiropractic Association, and numerous other professional organisations. Dr. O’Bryan is a practicing graduate of the Institute For Functional Medicine’s hallmark program Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice. He was recently selected as one of 5 nationally recognised presenters on 21st Century Endocrinology: Thyroid and Adrenals as Sentinel Organs for his presentation on the widening web of coeliac disease and thyroid dysfunction at the 2007 International Symposium for Functional Medicine.

He has specialised in the evolving understanding of gluten sensitivity and coeliac disease, the cross over with many autoimmune diseases then stimulated his exploration of the role of multiple nutrients in the aetiology and pathogenesis of autoimmunity. The increasing presentation of more than 80 autoimmune diseases are not the manifestation of genetic susceptibility alone. There have been many environmental changes that can now be considered a key factor in the creation and resolution of these disturbed immune pathways. The role of nutrition and nutrients in this process is growing very quickly, Dr O’Bryan will pull the relevant data from current scientific studies to ensure that you leave the day clear in purpose and evidence enriched.
