Over the more recent past a number of strands of evolving discovery indicate that subsets of commensal microbes materially influence the gut and associated mucosal immune system. In particular the peripherally generated regulatory T cell has been seen as a powerful addition in maintaining mucosal homeostasis in the gut and provides unique benefits not delivered by thymically induced Treg alone.

For instance, colonisation with the bacterium Clostridia promotes extrathymic generation of regulatory T (Treg) cells that have a central role in the suppression of inflammatory and allergic responses.

One of the key naturopathic and Darwinian medicine concepts[i],[ii] is that suppression of a normal response by the body to a pathogen may reduce the effectiveness of outcome.

Naturopathic Medicine is a form of alternative medicine based on a belief in vitalism, which posits that a special energy called vital energy or vital force guides bodily processes such as metabolism, reproduction, growth, and adaptation. Naturopathic philosophy favours a holistic approach, and, like conventional medicine seeks to find the least invasive measures necessary for symptom improvement or resolution, thus encouraging minimal use of surgery and unnecessary drugs.[iii]

Home Of Immune Memory Found

New findings overturn a major model of where immune memory is stored. Rather than circulating throughout the body, as researchers had thought, memory T-cells actually reside in a comfortable niche in the bone marrow waiting for the next chance to fight infection, according to a new article published online in Immunity today (May 7th). Immunologists have long believed that memory cells come from activated effector T cells that have resigned their ability to fight, and simply remain in circulation until they are re-activated a second time by the same pathogen they initially attacked. Researchers have now found that rather than remaining in the circulation as previously thought, the majority return to the bone marrow, 80% of them are found here. These cells remained there for up to 134 days — the length of time the researchers tested.
