Join Dr Elisabeth Philipps, PhD, in this enlightening webinar as she explores the critical role of cell membranes in human health and how to support optimal cellular function through Lipid Replacement Therapy (LRT).
Cell membranes are dynamic structures that support the physical and biochemical nature of each and every one of the different cells in the body. Robust cell membranes are fundamental for a healthy and energised body and mind.
Research shows that despite unique characteristics between cell types biological membranes share the same basic cell membrane “Fluid Mosaic Model” structure, which is also found in the various intracellular membranes including the nuclear envelope and mitochondrial membranes.
Healthy cell membranes contain a mix of different phospholipids, as well as other fats and proteins that support cell communication pathways and production of important signalling factors and energy molecules like ATP from mitochondria. However, the process of ageing, deficiency of specific dietary fats, as well as a nutrient-poor, ultra processed rich diet leads to chronic inflammation, which in turn can lead to oxidation and damage to the delicate membrane phospholipids.
If this destructive oxidation is left unchecked and the body’s natural oxidant systems are overwhelmed or under-functioning then chronic inflammation (“inflamm-ageing”) and accumulation of toxic membrane fats creates a perfect storm for rapidly advancing cell membrane damage. This in turn leads to reduced cell function including the mitochondria ability to produce ATP, and even cell death. This process is now known to contribute to accelerated ageing, as well as debilitating and life-impacting conditions like neurodegenerative diseases, heart disease and severe fatigue illnesses including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, fibromylagia and Long Covid.
In this CPD accredited webinar Dr Elisabeth Philipps will discuss:
- The role and importance of cell membranes to health and the different fats that support or hinder membrane structure and function.
- Lifestyle and environmental factors that impact cell and mitochondrial membrane health and function.
- Natural cell membrane repair mechanisms and how to support them through nutrient replacement and lifestyle changes as part of a Functional Medicine programme.
- Lipid Replacement Therapy® to support mitochondrial health and energy production.
